Ask a man with oily skin what he does about it and the answer is almost always subtractive: a stronger wash, a scrub, an alcohol based toner, sometimes all three, sometimes twice a day. It is an intuitive response, and it is the wrong one. It treats a functional secretion as if it were dirt.
1. What sebum actually is
Sebum is produced by sebaceous glands attached to hair follicles, and it reaches the surface through the follicular opening. It is a mixture of lipids, including triglycerides, wax esters, squalene and free fatty acids, with a composition unlike any other lipid mixture in the body. Squalene in particular is characteristic, and it is highly susceptible to oxidation by ultraviolet light and by air.
The functions attributed to sebum include contributing to the surface lipid film that limits water loss, delivering vitamin E to the stratum corneum, contributing to the slightly acidic surface pH that supports a stable microbial community, and supporting the hydrophobic character of the surface. None of these is optional in the way the marketing implies.
2. Why male output is higher, and stays higher
Sebaceous glands are androgen sensitive, as set out in androgens and male skin. Male output rises through puberty and then remains substantially elevated across adult life. Female output typically declines from around the fourth decade. The result is a widening divergence: by the fifties, the difference in average facial sebum output between men and women is considerable.
This matters for product selection. A great deal of skincare is formulated for a declining sebum environment, with rich occlusive vehicles that sit poorly on a high output surface. It is also why the common male complaint of a product feeling greasy is often a formulation mismatch rather than a preference.
3. Oxidised sebum, and the reason skin can feel worse by evening
Squalene oxidises readily. Oxidised squalene is comedogenic in laboratory models and is pro-inflammatory, and the products of sebum oxidation are one of the plausible links between ultraviolet exposure, pollution and worsened acne. This gives a mechanistic reason why a day of sun, heat and city air can leave skin feeling and behaving worse by evening, beyond simple volume.
It also provides a rationale for gentle evening cleansing that removes oxidised surface lipid without stripping the barrier, which is a very different instruction from twice daily aggressive degreasing.
4. The rebound question
Whether stripping the skin causes glands to produce more oil is genuinely contested. The gland is hormonally driven and does not obviously have a surface sensor telling it how much lipid remains. What is far better established is that harsh surfactants and alcohol disrupt the barrier, that a disrupted barrier produces tightness, irritation and reactive redness, and that the perceived greasiness of a surface changes when the stratum corneum is compromised.

5. What actually moderates oil
Only a small number of approaches have a real mechanism behind them, and they operate at different levels of intervention.

6. Pores, and what cannot be changed
Pore size is largely a function of sebaceous gland size and follicular opening, both androgen influenced and both genetically set. Nothing in a bottle shrinks a pore permanently. What can change is how visible a pore is: less accumulated debris and oxidised lipid, less surrounding inflammation, and better surface light scatter all reduce apparent size. Retinoids have the best evidence among topicals for changing this appreciably, and they do so slowly.
The claims worth ignoring are the ones offering an immediate and lasting reduction in pore size. The claims worth taking seriously describe a gradual change in appearance over months, which is what the underlying biology allows.
7. A defensible position
A reasonable approach for high sebum male facial skin is unremarkable and easy to state. Cleanse gently, once in the evening and with water or a mild cleanser in the morning. Use a light, non-occlusive moisturiser, because barrier support and oil control are not opposites. Use sunscreen, which is where most men lose the argument entirely, as discussed in sunscreen and men. Consider a retinoid if texture, congestion or early photoageing are concerns, and expect to wait. Treat anything inflammatory as a condition to be treated rather than a hygiene failure to be scrubbed away.
8. Seasonal and situational variation
Sebum output is not constant. It rises with ambient temperature, which is why the same man can feel uncomfortably oily in July and tight in January, and why a routine that works in one season frequently fails in the other. Humidity changes how the surface film behaves without changing output at all, which is why oiliness feels worse in a humid room than the measurements would predict.
Two practical consequences follow. First, a fixed year round routine is a poor fit for a variable secretion: a lighter vehicle in summer and a slightly richer one in winter is a reasonable adjustment rather than a marketing construct. Second, assessing whether a product works requires giving it long enough to cross a seasonal boundary, or at least comparing like with like. A man who changes cleanser in October and concludes it has fixed his oily skin has probably observed the weather.
The same caution applies to travel, to air conditioning, to shift work and to gym use. Where a change in the skin coincides with a change in environment, the environment is the more likely explanation than the product.
